A remarkable piece of cartographic history — Hammond's Handy Atlas of the World with New Census, inscribed by the Cilley family of Hickory, North Carolina and dated March 31, 1916. The front endpapers bear two period inscriptions in ink: "J.E. Cilley, Mar. 31, 1916, Hickory N.C." and "Clinton A. Cilley, Hickory No. Car." — a wonderful named provenance that grounds this atlas in a specific time and place.

Inside, the hand-colored maps are vivid and intact, covering the full world including detailed state maps of the US (Mississippi, Kentucky, and more) and world maps showing South America and Africa with European colonial possessions clearly delineated — a striking historical document of the pre-WWI world order.
