A remarkable pair of 1930s newspaper clipping scrapbooks, sold together as a lot — a genuine primary source time capsule from the heart of the Great Depression and New Deal era. Both scrapbooks were assembled by the same collector and are labeled in handwritten index cards affixed to the covers:
- Scrapbook 1: “Newspaper Items from Papa’s 1930s — Roosevelt Items” — housed in a purple and orange Jumbo Scrap Book with illustrated cover art by Bill Bailey. Contains full newspaper pages and clippings with headlines including “WPA Rushes $43,000,000 Flood Relief,” flood disaster coverage from Binghamton NY, Washington DC, Boston MA, and Hartford CT, and multiple Roosevelt-related political stories.
- Scrapbook 2: “Newspaper Items 1936” — housed in a black polka-dot Scrap Book with colorful cut-letter title. Contains full newspaper pages with headlines including “National City Moves to Free 50 Millions by Merger Plan,” “House Passes Ban on Gold by 283 to 57,” “Roosevelt’s Plea is Effort to Save Peace,” and “President Cites Need for Action.” Datelines include Cleveland, Monday May 8, 1933 and Wednesday May dates.
- Era: 1930s (confirmed dates include 1933 and 1936)
- Content: Full newspaper pages and clippings — Roosevelt administration, New Deal, WPA, banking, flood relief, international peace
- Condition: Fair/Good — page edges are brittle with age-related fragility; news clippings and text are legible and in good condition; covers are detached but included with each book
